  • Make sure each side of your cardboard square measures at least 18 inches.

Now, follow these steps:

  • To begin, create a 16-by-16-inch square inside the larger 18-by-18-inch cardboard square. All margins should be 1 inch in size.
  • The second step is to make a square with equal markings at 16 inches on each side. The marks should be 2 inches apart from one corner to the other.
  • Third, using a ruler, connect the dots on opposite sides of the 16-inch square. Iterate until you have a grid with 16 squares.
  • The fourth step is to use a marker, pen, pencil, or crayon to fill up the 8×8 grid. Make sure the bottom right corner of the grid is empty.
  • Optional Step 5: Add Chess or Checkers Notation. Put the letters A through H in the uncoloured portion of the bottom right corner of the grid. Place the numbers 1 through 8 in a vertical line at the base of the checkerboard. Move to the other side of the board and repeat the process.
